This arch, in fact the “front face,” stands opposite to buildings in the scenic area. As the grandest of all stone arches, it features 10.7 m height and 7 m width. Such size is true to the name of a giant artwork. The neat-looking edifice consists of 4 columns and 5 beams, all of which are carved in excellent white marbles. The 4 columns are supported by 8 stone lions while a giant triangle structure, in fact the arch’s upper part, is supported by 50 bracket sets. In particular, the eaves are turned up as if flying into the air. “Fish-Tail on the Ridge” and “Dragon-Head on the Angle Beam” add much elegance to the roof. And in the upper portion of the arch, there are mystic patterns such as “Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl,”“Nine Dragons Rolling Up and Down,”“Arcane Dragon Swooping over the Sky.”

The archway features west and east tablets carved with “Jing Zhong Bao Guo (Serving the Country with Selfless Loyalty)” and “Gong Ye Qian Qiu (Far-Reaching Exploits on the Posterity)”—inscriptions by Feng Jinqiu and Chen Yijing respectively. Jingzhong (Selfless Loyalty) alludes to a quote of “Biography of Yue Fei”, The History of Song Dynasty. However, the former saying can be found in ancient Chinese opera Mother Tattooed Characters on the Skin of Yue Fei. It is said that Yue Fei’s troops engaged in fight with Jin invaders along the Hanjiang River during his service as Pacification Commissioner of Hubei. At that time, plebs made rafts to help his army cross the river. Yue Fei felt so moved and inscribed the so-called characters “Jing Zhong Bao Guo.” Later on, the inscription was carved into a tablet and hung above the main hall of the Country-Serving Temple for sacrifice on a yearly basis.
